In October 2014, 6-year-old Kiara developed headaches that worsened over time. When she began vomiting from the pain, her parents took Kiara to the ER, where tests revealed the presence of a mass on her brain. She underwent surgery at a hospital near her home in Arizona to remove the tumor. After surgery, Kiara was unable to walk or talk. Her family was referred to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® for Kiara’s continuing treatment, which included chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food — because all a family should worry about is helping their child live. Kiara is again able to talk and she’s relearning how to walk. “She’s compassionate and kind,” said her dad. “She wants to make people happy.” Kiara recently finished treatment and now visits St. Jude for regular checkups. She loves to paint and draw and sing!
