St. Jude Heroes also help ensure that families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food – because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.

No one understands that better than St. Jude patient Adam, 17, who registered as a St. Jude Hero for the St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend on Dec. 5. He has acute lymphoblastic leukemia and is on a two-and-a-half year chemotherapy plan that will cost an estimated $2 million for his medicine alone.

Adam decided to give back to the place he says is saving his life and formed an army of friends and family around the country to raise $100,000 this year for St. Jude.

In observance of September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, now is the time to consider making the Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon experience even more meaningful by registering as a St. Jude Hero to raise awareness and funding for children like Adam.

Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20 percent to more than 80 percent since it opened in 1962.

But still, one in five children in the U.S. who have cancer will not survive. St. Jude is working to drive the overall survival rate for childhood cancer to 90 percent in the next decade. We won’t stop until no child dies from cancer.

St. Jude is leading the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Doctors often send their toughest cases to St. Jude because it has the world’s best survival rates for some of the most aggressive childhood cancers.
