Runners across the country hit the streets of Washington D.C. to end childhood cancer

Washington D.C. – February 28, 2017 – This month, thousands will gather to run the United Airlines Rock ‘n’ Roll Washington D.C. Marathon & ½ Marathon. This year, race participants have the chance to run for free by fundraising for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® as St. Jude Heroes.

More than 560 St. Jude Heroes, participants who fundraise on behalf of the hospital, will travel from across the country to run and support the kids of St. Jude, where families never receive a bill for treatment, travel, housing or food — because all a family should worry about is helping their child live. Together, they have raised more than $170,000.

One such St. Jude Hero is Brea Onokpise. Little more than a month after giving birth to her healthy baby daughter, Brea was diagnosed with a cancer in her leg – millimeters away from her sciatic nerve. Since then, this first-time Hero recently celebrated one year cancer free and loves fundraising for a hospital where families never receive a bill for treatment, travel, housing or food. With only a few weeks until the race, Brea is set to meet and exceed her $1,000 fundraising goal and is set to run three more half marathons this year.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is leading the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Dedicated to finding cures and saving children, treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20 percent to more than 80 percent since it opened over 50 years ago.

United Airlines Rock ‘n’ Roll Washington D.C. Marathon & ½ Marathon weekend includes a marathon, half marathon, and 5K on March 11.

After the races, runners will celebrate with a post-race concert featuring The Family Stone at the finish line festival outside of RFK Stadium. All runners will receive a finisher’s medal, Brooks technical t-shirt and personalized finisher certificate.

Race weekend kicks off with a free Health & Fitness Expo on Thursday, March 9 through Friday, March 10 at the DC Armory. Dozens of retailers will be on hand, offering the latest in nutrition and fitness apparel.
