Denver, Colo., July 14, 2014 – Not quite up for a 13.1 or 26.2 mile distance? Rock ‘n’ Roll Denver has you covered! The race has announced a brand new 10K (6.2 mile) distance that will welcome runners of all abilities, as well as those with limited time to train. More than 15,000 runners are expected to participate in the 5th annual race on Sunday, October 19.
The race will also feature a 5K (3.1) in addition to the marathon and half marathon. All distances are timed and offer participants the same perks, including a finishers’ medal, t-shirt and swag bag as well as access to the post-race concert.
“We’ve redesigned the marathon and half marathon courses this year, and now with the addition of the 10K distance, we’ve made some changes that will really elevate the experience we’re creating,” said Alan Culpepper, Olympian and event spokesman. “Our aim is always to make running accessible and fun. The welcoming atmosphere combined with a variety of distances means anyone can be a Rock ‘n’ Roll finisher.”
The musically themed marathon features live, local bands along every mile of the route, highlighting the Denver music scene as runners tour the city. Motivation is also found with cheerleading squads, themed water stations and cheering spectators.
10K runners will start in the Highlands neighborhood, while the 5K, marathon and half marathon will start at Civic Center Park, where all the races will finish. Major changes have been made to both the marathon and half marathon routes, including a scenic run around beautiful Sloan’s Lake with views of the mountains followed by a stunning skyline view heading back downtown into Confluence Park. All three major sports arenas, Coors Field, Sports Authority Field at Mile High Stadium, and the Pepsi Center, will be on display along the course as well as the Denver Art Museum and the new Union Station.
Marathoners will run through both City Park and Washington Park, which feature scenic views of the city and striking autumn colors. A downhill finish will bring participants back to Civic Center Park under the shadows of the State Capitol building, where friends and family will join for a post-race concert and finish line festival.
Race weekend kicks off with a free Health & Fitness Expo at the Colorado Convention Center on Friday, October 17 and Saturday, October 18. More than 100 retailers will be on hand, offering the latest in nutrition and fitness apparel along with a series of interactive clinics with running experts.
