Denver, Colorado – September 30, 2014 – The USA Track & Field Colorado Association and the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series today announced that the USATF Colorado Association State Half Marathon Championships (State Championships) will take place at the Janus Rock ‘n’ Roll Denver Marathon & ½ Marathon following the recent cancellation of the Boulder Marathon. The Janus Rock ‘n’ Roll Denver event weekend is scheduled for October 17-19, 2014.

“After the unfortunate developments in Boulder, we’re thrilled that the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series has stepped up to host the 2014 State Half Marathon Championships in Denver,” said Dan Pierce, President of the USATF Colorado Association. “Our mission is to provide more opportunities and better service for our athletes. To host our State Championships in Denver is an ideal alternative and we are confident that the Janus Rock ‘n’ Roll Denver event will provide a world-class venue and gracious hospitality to the competitors.”

The 2014 State Championships will feature $6,500 in prize money plus time bonuses dedicated to half-marathon athletes. In order to be eligible for State Championship awards, athletes must be members of USATF – Colorado and be eligible to represent the United States in international athletics competition. Athletes interested in competing can email eliteathletes@competitorgroup.com for additional information.

“As a former president and executive director of a USATF association, I have the utmost appreciation for what USATF Colorado is trying to do for its long distance runners and we are delighted to host the 2014 State Championships,” said Tracy Sundlun, SVP of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series and former track coach at the University of Colorado. “We are proud of our 5-year history in Denver and have been working closely with the Colorado running community to support it in every way possible.”

Hosting the State Championships follows the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series offering of free entry to r unners displaced by the cancellation of the Boulder Marathon. The Janus Rock ‘n’ Roll Denver Marathon initially guaranteed spots for the first 200 transfers and, due to an overwhelming response, has increased capacity to extend complimentary entries to 300 impacted runners.

Boulder entrants, who have not redeemed a free Denver entry, can email proof of registration to rnrdenver@competitorgroup.com with the subject line “Boulder Transfer” to receive a $50 discount on any remaining 2014 Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series event. Limited entries remain for the Janus Rock ‘n’ Roll Denver Marathon & ½ Marathon and the event is on pace to sellout.

Celebrating its 5 year anniversary in 2014, the race will welcome more than 15,000 runners to the Mile High City the weekend of October 17-19 with live bands, cheerleaders and thousands of spectators lining the course. The three-day running festival includes a variety of running distances with a 5k, 10k and relay. Race weekend kicks off with a two-day Health & Fitness Expo at the Colorado Convention Center.

The race starts and finishes at Civic Center Park, and the course features little to no elevation change and is certified by USA Track & Field. The course highlights many of Denver’s major landmarks including the Denver Art Museum, the Pepsi Center, Union Station and Coors Field. Event officials have also worked over the past year to add more runner amenities that make for a better race experience, including additional port-o-potties, medical stations and water stations.

Event weekend concludes with a finish line festival at Civic Center Park and post race concert headlined by The Wild Feathers. For more information, please visit RunRocknRoll.com or follow @RunRocknRoll on Twitter.
