Brittani Garrison, 17, a high school senior who will leave for college in the fall, wanted to give her mom Sally a memorable birthday gift before she left home.
“I’ll be leaving home and wanted to do one last thing with her before I left,” said Brittani.
Like many parents and their teenaged children, spending time together can be a challenge, so Brittani gave her mom the gift of time.
“And my mom is always wanting us to spend more time with each other, so I figured training together and running together would be a nice way to do this,” said Brittani, who runs track and cross-country for her school.
So, Brittani signed herself and her mom up for the Transamerica Rock ’n’ Roll Half Marathon in San Francisco, albeit with one surprise.
“I didn’t tell her that I signed her up!” she laughed with a mischievous smile.
Sally’s reaction when she got her registration confirmation email? « What?! Really?! Wow. Okay, I guess we’d better start training.«
Sally, 46, is a veteran of races, but hasn’t participated since 2010 due to health issues. « I dug out all my old workout clothes and gear and, well, here I am,” she said, beaming.
Mom and daughter trained for the past 12 weeks or so near their home in Santa Clara, California and both were full of hugs, smiles and tears at the finish line.
As they moved through the finisher zone to get their photo taken, Sally added “thanks to my daughter I’m feeling better than ever and I’m back on track!”
