New Record Set in 2018

The Kenyan Valentine Kipketer smashes the record of the EDP Rock ‘n’ Roll Madrid Marathon with 2:30:40. Among the men, her compatriot Eliud Barngetuny triumphs at 2:10:15.

Madrid was dawning with a leaden sky. Clouds did not threaten to rain but made for a dramatic environment at the start line of the EDP Rock ‘n’ Roll Madrid Marathon & ½ Marathon. The weather added to the tension in the legs of the more than 35,500 participants, eager to take to the city streets and race, and achieve their goals.

The 41st EDP Rock ‘n’ Roll Madrid Marathon & ½ Marathon celebrated a new layout that ended in the Paseo del Prado, offering runners a much less demanding sprint to the finish than in prior years. A new location for the much anticipated finish line arch, set at the most emblematic corners of the Villa and Corte does nothing but increase smiles when crossing the finish line.

And among all those who have crossed this line, the names of Eliud Barngetuny and, above all, Valentine Kipketer are highlighted. Both have triumphed in the marathon with times of 2:10:15 and 2:30:40. Kipketer, takes a new record for women, snatching the previous record from the hands of Mehtap Sizmaz (TUR) with 2:32:04, set in 2009.

They join the Chema Martínez club (who today was the first Spanish to finish ten years after their triumph in the same event), Abdelkader El Mouaziz, Desta Tadesse or Vanessa Veiga, also winners in Madrid. The male podium was completed by Keneth Kiplagat (KEN) with 2:10:24 and Alfonce Kibiwot (KEN) with 2:10:32 while the second and third females were Diana Sigei (KEN) with 2:38:12 and Megertu Ifa Geletu (ETH) with 2:39:12.

For its part, the half marathon was dominated by Gizaw Bekele (ETH) in the men’s category with a time of 1:03:16 and Sarah Crouch (USA) with 1:18:50 among the females. They have been accompanied in the draw by Carles Castillejo (C.A. Adidas) and Samwel Kibiwot (KEN) in men and Siobhan O’Doherty (IRL) in the women.

Meanwhile, in the 10K, 7,000 runners took the start, a 50/50 split of men and women. Sergio Salinero (Clínica Menorca, 30:51) and Ana Lozano (C.A. Adidas, 35:31) were honored as champions.

This Sunday’s racing, yet again demonstrates the greatness of an event that was born in the distant 1978 and through which hundreds of thousands of runners have made strides down Madrid’s asphalt.
