As every runner toes the start line, within them resides the story that carried them there. Those stories are made up of moments that culminate in milestones.

The history of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series is made of moments and milestones created by runners just like you. In honor of our 20th anniversary celebration, we invite runners to share their most memorable running moments with us.

This is the story of Isabelle L., from Repentigny, Canada.

“In the past, I often used to say how much I’d love to be a runner. I’d see runners go by and I really admired them … I never dreamed that one day I’d be the one running by.”

Isabelle from Repentigny started her running journey just two years ago, as a way to take control of her health and lose weight.

“I started walking one minute, running one minute, and so on,” she said. Now, 85 pounds lighter, she’s about to run her first half marathon this September at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Oasis Montreal Marathon & 1/2 Marathon.

Losing weight and sticking to something new is no easy feat, but Isabelle had the full support of her family, friends and even colleagues. “Everyone congratulated me and said I was a real inspiration,” she said. “That’s a huge help when you’re making such a major life change.”

And what keeps her motivated?

“Honestly, it’s not very hard to stay motivated to run,” she said. “I feel great when I run, it’s my time for me—I love that.”

Isabelle has also inspired others around her, including her husband, who just signed up for a 5km in June, to start running and living a healthier lifestyle.

“Whether it’s running or something else, I’m proud to have realized that where there’s a will there’s a way; you just have to have confidence in yourself and put the effort into it,” she said. “Anything’s possible and I’m living proof.”

Isabelle looks forward to someday running a race with her husband, and as for running in general, she doesn’t think she could ever give it up.

“At this point, I can’t go a week without running, I miss it too much.”
