2016 Suja Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon | Photos


More than 33,000 participants took to the streets in sunny San Diego for the 19th annual Suja Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon and ½ Marathon on Sunday and the 5K presented by Brooks on Saturday. 2016 Olympian Shalane Flanagan ran a blazing time in San Diego, winning the women’s race in 1:07:51. It smashed her personal-best in the half marathon, and was the second-fastest half run by an American this year. Fellow Olympian Amy Cragg finished two minutes behind Flanagan on Sunday, but still ran a personal-best 1:09:51. On the men’s side, Scott Smith won the half marathon in a time of 62:35, ahead of Daniel Teklebrhan (63:38) and Jeffrey Eggleston (63:48). 4-time Olympian and San Diego native, Meb Keflegizhi paced both the 5K and the half-marathon in his hometown. Kevin Gonzalez ran his 100th Rock ‘n’ Roll event when he completed the half marathon greeted by his parents and friends at the finish. In the marathon, Eric Noel placed first in the men’s race (2:26:39) followed by Franklin Tenorio (2:34:37) and Eddie Venegas (2:37:50). On the women’s side, McKale Davis won the marathon with a time of 2:56:16 coming in behind her was Maija Hitchings (3:03:09) and Bessy Leszczynski (3:06:15).

The event concluded Sunday afternoon with the Toyota Rock ‘n’ Roll Concert by Gavin DeGraw. Over the 19-year history of the race, participating runners have raised more than $176 million for charity in San Diego.
