- Alternative rock band to perform at finish line festival at Eakins Oval, Fairmount Park
- Annual fall race returns the weekend of Sept. 17-18 and will debut revamped half marathon course
Alternative rock band, Guster will headline the 2016 American Association for Cancer Research Rock ‘n’ Roll Philadelphia Half Marathon on Sunday, September 18, 2016. The band will perform for thousands of runners and spectators at the Toyota Rock ‘n’ Roll Concert Series event at Eakins Oval, Fairmount Park. The finish line concert is free and open to the public.
“Guster’s headlining performance will be an epic finale for runners celebrating that 13.1 mile accomplishment,” said Kevin Buffalino, Event Manager. “With a revamped course, the return of the Remix Challenge and Guster headlining, race weekend will be a giant party from start to finish so grab a friend and join us this September.”
Guster hails from Boston, Massachusetts where they emerged on the scene in 1991. They got their big break in 1999 when they released the single “Fa Fa,” which was featured on Billboard magazine’s Adult Top 40. They have released six studio albums including, Parachute, Ganging Up on the Sun and most recently Evermotion. The band’s music has also been featured in a variety of movies and TV shows including, Wedding Crashers and The O.C.
AACR Rock ‘n’ Roll Philadelphia will feature two-days of running with the half marathon on Sunday, September 18 at 7:30 am and the AACR Rock ‘n’ Roll 5K on Saturday, September 17 at 7:30 am. Participants can take the “Remix Challenge” by running both Saturday and Sunday to earn the coveted Remix Challenge medal in addition to each race’s finisher medals.
The half marathon will debut a revamped course this year, which will feature new sites including Fairmount Ave and the historic Eastern State Penitentiary. The route will continue to start and finish in Eakins Oval, Fairmount Park and participants will once again experience Philadelphia’s unique cultural landmarks including, City Hall, the LOVE sculpture, Boathouse Row, Schuylkill River and more.
In true Rock ‘n’ Roll fashion, live bands, enthusiastic cheerleaders and spectators will line the race route, concluding with a celebratory finish line festival and post race Toyota Rock ‘n’ Roll Concert Series headlined by Guster at Fairmount Park.
Race weekend kicks off with a free Health & Fitness Expo, where runners can find the latest in running technologies, fitness apparel, health and nutrition information and interactive displays. The expo takes place at the Pennsylvania Convention Center on Friday, September 16 from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, September 17 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The expo is free and open to the public.
