CARLSBAD, Calif. – Recognized as the ‘World’s Fastest 5k’ with a storied history of 16 world records, the 2016 Carlsbad 5000 will feature current world record holder Meseret Defar. Defar set the world record of 14:46 at Carlsbad in 2006, the first of her three event victories.
“I can’t believe 10 years have passed since I set the world record in Carlsbad. A lot has happened to me on and off the track since then, but it remains a race which is close to my heart for many reasons,” said Defar. “Since the birth of our daughter Gabrielle last year I’m now back racing well and my indoor performances show me that I am ready to run well, run fast and hopefully post another quick time.”
A signature event of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series, the Carlsbad 5000 will celebrate 31 years the weekend of April 2 – 3, 2016. The race is internationally known as the “World’s Fastest 5K” because 16 world records, 8 U.S. records, along with numerous national and age-group records have been set on the scenic oceanfront course.
“I’m excited for the rest of the year, I’m looking forward to the world indoor championships in Portland this weekend and then Carlsbad is my next challenge before turning attention to the track and the Rio Olympics,” she added.
Event weekend kicks off with a Junior Carlsbad pre-registration party on Friday, April 1st hosted at the Carlsbad Village Faire. On Saturday, April 2nd more than 1,500 junior racers, age 12 and under, will take part in one of the eleven age group races. All runners receive a t-shirt and finisher’s medal for their efforts. Sunday’s ‘Party by the Sea’ gets started as soon as the first runners cross the finish line. After enjoying the scenic 3.1-mile course, runners aged 21 and over can step into the beer garden, sip two free beers from Pizza Port and enjoy a live music.
