Raleigh Ranks as Top Running City in the South

The city of Raleigh, North Carolina has found its way among the Top 50 of the Runner’s World list of America’s Best Running Cities. Coming in at #19, the city’s sophisticated charm is proving to be irresistible for runners from all over the U.S., which explains why the city has skyrocketed as a prime destination among the running world. It also explains how N.C. beat out the 231 other competing cities that ranked below the city.

Ranking in the Top 20, it also marks Raleigh as the premiere running city in the south! Go North Carolinians!

The task to rate and rank the best spots for runners began with a whopping 250 cities! Raleigh was touted against competing cities like San Diego, California; Richmond, Virginia; Denver, Colorado; Cincinnati, Ohio; Atlanta, Georgia and many others.

Each city included in the study had a population of over 160,00 and also held the highest number of households per capita that had participated in running within the last year. The study then looked at things that are important to runners, like climate, safety, the diversity of running trails and terrain and other elements.

So what’s so special about Raleigh? Well, the most notable characteristic is it’s running index, which ranked 13th out of the 250. This means the types of different runs residents and visitors can enjoy, be it a green-way, loops through the city, a wilderness trail, or routes that weave in and out of these and more. The running index also includes the scenery along the route. Raleigh offers runners routes past countless lakes, creeks and lush natural landscapes and gardens; all complemented by a neat city backdrop filled with some  of the nation’s best universities, historical landmarks, science and technology hubs, museums, the state Capitol and more.

It’s official, Raleigh is the place to be in the south and among the best in the nation when it comes to running. The Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon is headed to Raleigh April 1-2, 2017.
