Running two half marathons in two different cities just hours apart from each other? Some would call it “crazy”, running enthusiasts like John Mattos casually call it a “really good opportunity”.
The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series 2013 event schedule concludes with not one, but two events on the same day. Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio commences on Sunday, November 17 at 7:30am followed by Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas at 4:30pm. A few ambitious runners are undertaking the challenge of the double event (#SA2LV); planning to run San Antonio in the morning, then boarding one of two Southwest flights that will get them to Las Vegas in time to run their second race.
After doing his first half marathon at the 2011 Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas, John is a seasoned endurance running participant and loyal Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series supporter. Being one of the few runners in pursuit of accomplishing the #SA2LV challenge, we asked him to share his story.
Previously, I’d never run more than 3-4 miles, and was more involved with things like weightlifting and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (both of which I still do to round out my training). After that race, I did a few more smaller races around Las Vegas and then when the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas came around again, I decided to train for the full, and basically haven’t looked back since (that was November 2012).
At that point I just bought the TourPass and decided to go crazy with it, planning 11 events:
- Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona | Full
- Rock ‘n’ Roll Pasadena | Half
- Rock ‘n’ Roll Portland | Half
- Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego | Full
- Rock ‘n’ Roll Philadelphia | Half
- Rock ‘n’ Roll Providence | Half
- Rock ‘n’ Roll San Jose | Half
- Rock ‘n’ Roll Denver | Half
- Rock ‘n’ Roll Los Angeles | Half
- Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio | Half
- Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas (half or full, I haven’t decided)
San Antonio will be where I get my “Rock Idol” and then I’ll do Las Vegas as a bonus!
I decided to do #SA2LV for a couple of reasons. I’ve heard that San Antonio is a beautiful course, and I was registered for it before the date changed, so I was already planning on doing it. And of course living in Las Vegas, I HAVE to do the Las Vegas race. I like to challenge myself and this seems like a really good opportunity.
Honestly, as far as training, there’s nothing special I’m doing. I’m running the ING New York Marathon on 11/3, so I’m already trained up to do a full marathon, so I’m thinking that two half’s would be fine. If I do a half and a full (I’ll have to see how New York goes first), now THAT will be a challenge!
