Every event brings thousands of participants to our start lines from all walks of life and each individual has a different story. We are fortunate enough to not only host events that celebrate the sport, but at times allow for the opportunity to celebrate how this community brings people together.
Michael and Lauren met through mutual running friends at an annual Turkey Trot in Charlotte, NC. They began running together and dating in December, 2011. Luckily Lauren had an endurance sport background, as Michael’s 2012 racing schedule featured a 50k, 40 miler, trail marathon and road marathon, all before the end of March. (No biggie, right?) Lauren was there for him every step of the way, crewing in the forests of North Carolina, cheering at the finish line in Virginia Beach, sharing the road and greenway all around Charlotte, and they began to see a long future together.
Having been a running coach in Charlotte, Michael was familiar with the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series. Lauren’s training group was preparing for the 2012 Rock ‘n’ Roll Savannah race and Michael remarks, “I couldn’t think of a better place to express my love and admiration for her than at an event that we both love so much.” Thanks to some Rock ‘n’ Roll staff, Michael was able to wait for Lauren at the finish line of Savannah and surprise her with a proposal.
They were married October 26, 2013 in Charlotte, NC. Between their bridesmaids and groomsmen they tallied over 220 race finishes:
- 48 half marathons
- 42 marathons (28 by just one bridesmaid)
- 31 triathlons
- 7 ultra marathons
Lauren also surprised Michael with a Brooks Pure Drift Groom’s Cake (pictured), which was actually modeled after their personal pairs of PureDrifts. Their wedding was complete with a “Finish Line” banner as they walked down the aisle as husband and wife. They are both returning to Savannah to run the 2013 Rock ‘n’ Roll Savannah Half Marathon as an addendum to their wedding celebration. We would like to wish them both congratulations and a great race!
Michael and Lauren’s story is just one of many that represent and inspire the members of the Rock ‘n’ Roll community. Share your personal story and you could be featured in our Runner Spotlight.
