Ever wonder who’s standing next to you in your corral at the start line, or cheering you on when you’re about to give up during a race? As runners we all have a story, a motivation to run whether it’s a personal challenge, to stay fit, bond with friends, raise money for charity, or work through a difficult time.
Meet Susan and Ron Carino, the ultimate marathon couple.
It all started as a couple of items on Ron’s bucket list: 1) Complete a marathon; and 2) have a meal in all 50 states. Susan didn’t want to be left behind, so in 2005, they completed the Mayor’s Marathon in Anchorage, Alaska for their 10 year wedding anniversary. Team in Training (TNT) taught them everything they needed to know about completing a marathon with a smile. They have enjoyed coaching the TNT San Francisco Bay Area Walk Team and helping others successfully complete their first endurance event. Their bucket list grew from “A Marathon” to “50 Events (half and/or full marathons) by age 50”, which they completed four years early. After finishing the January 2014 Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Half Marathon, the count stands at 70 events each. They have raised the bar to completing 100 events by December of 2016.
Ron and Susan’s marathoning has led to many adventures across the globe, including seeing a total solar eclipse, a World Series Game, the ancient wonders of Rome, glaciers in Alaska, the Great Barrier Reef, platypuses in their natural habitat and being part of the world’s biggest Santa Run in 2011. They renewed their wedding vows – twice – on the race course at Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas in 2010 and 2013. Best of all, their marriage has been strengthened because they have experience all of this together and continue to motivate each other to keep going and set even higher goals. “Racing feeds many aspects of our overall well being. The obvious one is physical health. We have to stay on top of training and maintenance to keep up our busy race schedule. Between the two of us, we’ve lost 100 pounds since we started racing. We’ve also met some of our closest friends on the race circuit and see some of them more than we see our own families!”
Thanks to TourPass Global, 2013 was their busiest year to date, including 17 half marathons (13 Rock ‘n’ Rolls), a 15K and a 5K with the Biggest Loser Run/Walk series and a few local races in the San Francisco Bay area. “Our proudest race accomplishment was completing the SA2LV RNR San Antonio to RNR Las Vegas half marathons on the same day (with a vow renewal in between for good measure).” What’s their plan for 2014? Ron and Susan plan on becoming four-time Rock Idol Heavy Medalists, finishing the last of the North American Tour stops including the Inaugural races in Raleigh and Vancouver, and checking off races on two more continents (Antarctica and South America). “We feel blessed to be a part of the marathoning community and plan to stay on the road for as long as we’re able! Walk far. Walk smooth. Walk Fast.”
