Every event brings thousands of participants to our start lines from all walks of life and each individual has a different story. We are fortunate enough to not only host events that celebrate the sport, but at times allow for the opportunity to celebrate how this community brings people together. Today’s post comes from Tavish Margers, a runner and supporter of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas charity partner Team Challenge.
The 2010 Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Half Marathon was my first race ever. It was also the first race I had ever done with Team Challenge. I joined Team Challenge to help find a cure for my young son Trevor. I spent months training for the race with Team Challenge and months fundraising to help my son. Both running and fundraising would easily be described as things “way outside my comfort zone”.
Finally, the day came to enjoy the fruits of my labor. My first race was upon me. There were thousands of people there to share my experience, and it was most certainly one of the best days of my life.
I know I’ll never get to have that “first race experience” again, but because of the wonderful memories I had from that first Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas event, I have returned every year since to run it with Team Challenge, and every year, it is even better than the year before! Now when I am running and I see that finish line, I think back to that first race. I recall the overwhelming feeling of pride and accomplishment I had that first time. You can see the faces of those around you and you know who is crossing that line for the first time. You can tell those ladies over there are best friends and they did garage sales and bake sales to help out a friend in need that has a terrible disease, and they are finishing up an incredible journey that they will never forget.
I’ll be back again in 2014 once again, but this time, it will be more special than ever. My son Trevor is now old enough to race with me and he will be running his first half marathon. Just like me, his first one will be Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Half Marathon with Team Challenge!
