I have run the Rock ‘n’ Roll New Orleans Half Marathon three times. I even ran the race back when it was called Rock ‘n’ Roll Mardi Gras.
This will be my fourth time, and I cannot wait to hit the streets again. I grew up in the New Orleans area, and it is always good to go back “home” for a race!
There are a lot of great reasons to run this race (Including the fact there there is now a 10k option!) I could go on and on, but today I will share with you my top five:
1.) The City: New Orleans is an amazing and unique city. Sure it can get really hot in the summer and gets a bad rap for not being very healthy, but there is so much more than that. When you come in town for this race weekend, there are a plethora of things you can do with your time while here (other than race of course!) Think steamboat rides, the aquarium, ghost tours, and the WWII museum. Be sure to spend some time just wandering the city, walking around the Riverwalk, or checking out the French Market.
2.) Weather: I know last year the race was warmer and more humid, but typically the weather in January is very nice in New Orleans. It’s chilly but not freezing, which to me is great running weather! There aren’t many places where you can race in January in shorts, right?
3.) Flat and fast: New Orleans is below sea level…and continuing to sink as a matter of fact, so there are literally no hills to be found on this course. If you are looking for a PR this race season, this is the course to do it on.
4.) Entertainment on course: Everyone loves to have a good time in the crescent city, and the locals fully embrace all of the events the city has to offer. Not only does Rock ‘n’ Roll provide on course entertainment, but the locals come out in force with their own “aid stations” and entertainment. I have seen mimosas, beer, fried alligator, great musicians, and funky decorations.
5.) Food: Not only are there many local attractions to check out on your visit to the big easy, but you can also find some of the best food in the country. There are so many restaurants to choose from, it can be impossible to pick where to celebrate with a post race meal. For the best suggestions, ask a local or the employees at your hotel, they will know best kept secrets!
These are just a few of the many reasons to run this amazing race. There are many more, and I would be happy to share them with you and I hope to see you at the race! Oh, and don’t forget to bring your Mardi Gras colors and costumes. You will fit in just fine, I promise.
