2016 Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego: Meet the Olympians

Olympians Shalane Flanagan, Amy Cragg and Meb Keflezighi were in full stride at the 2016 Suja Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon & 1/2 Marathon. The trio represented half of the United States contingent that would go on to represent America at the 2016 Olympic Games Marathon in Rio.

The Suja Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Half Marathon was the only scheduled competition for Amy Cragg and Shalane Flanagan as they were training for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

Amy Cragg qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics when she placed first in the Trials in Los Angeles with a time of 2:28:20. Cragg participated in the 2012 Olympics in the 10,000m and barely missed the 2012 Olympic team for the marathon. She placed second in her debut marathon in 2011; her time of 2:27:03 made her the eighth-fastest American marathoner of all time. She won the 2015 Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Half Marathon in 1:12:04.

Shalane Flanagan placed third in the trials in 2:29:19, clenching a spot in her fourth Olympic Games. Flanagan has one of the most decorated resumes among U.S. women distance runners — an Olympic bronze medalist in the 10,000m and a marathon PR of 2:21:14, second in U.S. history behind Deena Kastor’s 2:19:36. Her 2:22:02 time at the 2014 Boston marathon is the fastest time by an American woman in the race’s history. She won the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon in Houston with a time of 2:25:38. She won the 2013 Rock ‘n’ Roll New Orleans Half Marathon in her personal best 1:08:31.

Meb Keflezighi qualified for his fourth Olympic team when he placed second at the Olympic Trials in Los Angeles. Meb earned a silver medal in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and has won more than 22 national championships. With his historic win at the Boston Marathon in 2014, Meb sealed his legacy as one of the world’s greatest distance runners. In 2009, he became the first American man to win the New York City Marathon since 1982, which was the first marathon victory of his career. Meb is the only person to win the Boston Marathon, New York Marathon and an Olympic medal.

Meb’s weekend at the 19th annual Suja Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon and 1/2 Marathon included an appearance on Saturday, June 4, when Meb paced the Suja Rock ‘n’ Roll 5K that started and finished at Balboa Park. Meb also participated on Sunday, June 5, when he paced the 1:30 half marathoners.
