It’s almost time to pack and head for the (sometimes) foggy city by the sea. I am so excited to run the United Airlines Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon San Francisco again and this year we get a brand new course! I decided to book a hotel in a location I really wanted to experience, so I went with Fisherman’s Wharf and the race followed. Winning! We now start and finish right there; much less fuss than the bus.
So what will we be seeing as we make our way around beautiful San Francisco?
Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39: Packed full of restaurants (plan now for where you’ll celebrate after the race), attractions, sea lions and shopping.
Lombard Street: It’s a couple of blocks off the route but wait, it looks familiar…it’s right there on the Finisher Medal! Hop over after the race to take the ultimate medal shot and share it with everyone on social media using #RnRSanFrancisco
The Golden Gate Bridge: Views for days from both ends of the Golden Gate at Vista Point (north) and Marine Drive (south). Take a few moments to enjoy the experience of running over this gorgeous 1.7 mile landmark – out and back!
The Presidio: A huge National Park with trails, views, beaches and historic sites. I hope my hiking legs work after the Half.
Alcatraz: Our constant companion on the route, home to the abandoned prison that held some of the most notorious criminals in American history. If you’re feeling adventurous there’s an annual triathlon where you start by swimming (escaping) from Alcatraz to the San Francisco shore. I’m glad we’re staying on dry land!
Ghirardelli Square: Chocolate, ice cream, shops, oh my! Your concert is right here at the Finish Line Festival. This year we have Ghirardelli chocolates at the Finish Line and Michelob beer.
Spirit: San Fran also has some of the BEST spirit stations I’ve ever seen! Who can forget the Haight Ashbury flowers or the drag queens?! I’ve heard it’s getting even better in 2018 with a new and improved on course experience.
Bring it! Let the party begin!
