Transamerica Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon San Francisco Partners with wear blue: run to remember

Running group will honor fallen military while cheering on runners at April 3 race

The 2016 Transamerica Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon San Francisco has partnered with wear blue: run to remember to inspire runners as they take on the hills of San Francisco on April 3. For the first time in the city, members of the wear blue organization will line mile 2 of the half-marathon course with families of the fallen, active duty military, and veteran service members holding American flags as a living memorial to our fallen military. Pictures of men and women who have died in service will also be stationed along the mile to encourage and remind runners of their sacrifice.DSC_7490

“Transamerica Rock ‘n’ Roll San Francisco is a challenging 13.1 mile course,” said Lyndsi Weichert, event manager. “It is an honor to have wear blue and their volunteers there reminding everyone of our soldiers’ sacrifices and providing inspiration to the runners as they make their way toward the finish line.”

In addition to San Francisco, wear blue will honor our military at three other Rock ‘n’ Roll events in 2016: the Rock ‘n’ Roll DC Marathon which just took place March 12, the Suja Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon on June 5 and the Alaska Airlines Rock ‘n’ Roll Seattle Marathon on June 18.

Co-founded by Army spouses Lisa Hallett, a seasoned marathoner whose husband was killed in Afghanistan, and avid runner, Erin O’Connor, wear blue: run to remember grew from a small group of military wives to a nationwide vision of athletes in blue, running to honor our country’s fallen service members. The group is comprised of a powerful network of military members, military families, veterans, wounded warriors, and community members. wear blue: run to remember creates a healthful opportunity for people to honor fallen military, heal from deployment, connect with the military and forge new ties of leadership and support through the sport of running.

The event is returning to San Francisco for its fourth year with the half-marathon distance. The race concludes with a headliner concert and finish line festival at Civic Center Plaza where alternative pop duo MS MR will rock the post-race Toyota Rock ‘n’ Roll Concert Series. In addition to the headliner, runners will enjoy live entertainment stationed along the course as they make their way to the finish line.

Race weekend kicks off in April with the free Health & Fitness Expo at the Moscone Center where runners can pick up their race weekend packet. Exhibitors and vendors will offer free samples, showcase the latest in running gear, sports apparel, health and nutritional information and much more. The expo takes place on Friday, April 1, from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm and Saturday, April 2, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and is free and open to the public.
