Meet Amy. She Took Bad News & Ran with It

prev of next

Hailing from the Peach State, Amy took bad news and ran with it–literally.

In 2014, just three days before her 40th birthday, Amy learned that her father was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer. Rather than letting her worries for her father stop her in her tracks, Amy added a new item to her bucket list–running her first marathon–and she used her father’s diagnosis as motivation and inspiration.

“The news rocked my family to the core. Training runs became my way to escape and when I wanted to give up, I remembered my dad wasn’t giving up.”

She shared that the 2015 Rock ‘n’ Roll Savannah Marathon & 1/2 Marathon quickly became her purpose, specifically with the intent of bringing awareness to this rare disease.

“Race day was scary and exciting all rolled into one. Every runner has a purpose to finish. When it got tough, I’d see someone running with a prosthetic or an older person. Nothing’s more humbling than realizing that if they can do this, then I can too.”

“I’d think of my daddy and all he was going through and nothing could stop me from crossing that Finish Line. I’d pray when that mile would take forever. Along the course I got to explain what mesothelioma is. Bringing awareness was my purpose; I just didn’t know that when I signed up.”

Once she reached the Finish Line and realized her unique ambition, Amy was greeted by her husband and broke down in tears. “The race course was amazing. The bands exciting and fun. My first marathon will be one I will never forget.”

Three years since tackling her bucket list marathon, Amy is still running, having recently completed the half marathon at St. Jude Rock ‘n’ Roll Nashville. She’s registered and busy planning her return run at Rock ‘n’ Roll Savannah in 2017 where she’ll take on 26.2 again. She offers the following words of advice, “Never say never to any distance and never compare yourself to anyone else on the course. It’s your race, your run!”

Amy is one of the many Rock Stars that have created their moment through the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series, and we’re honoring them all, as part of our 20 Years Running celebrations.

Join Amy and create your moment in Savannah on November 4-5, 2017!
