Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Legacy: 15 Years in 2015

Do you remember your very first race you ever ran? We remember our very first Virginia Beach race. The year was 2001. We finished on the oceanfront at the first-ever destination half marathon, Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach. Now, we’re here to paint a picture of Virginia Beach Legacy: 15 years in the making.

In 2015, we celebrated our 15th year running anniversary in Virginia Beach, and we were joined by a very special group of legacy runners who have been with us since the event’s inception! Read on to learn about these loyal and enthusiastic participants who’ve been with us since the beginning — and every year since!

Meet Legacy Runner Patrick

Patrick, one of our amazing Virginia Beach legacy runners, shared his story with Competitor.com. At 51 years old, he was gearing up for his 15th anniversary of running Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach. Owing in part to his civic pride, this Virginia Beach resident had not missed a single half marathon with us.

Celebrating Our Virginia Beach Legacy Runners

We have nothing but love for our Virginia Beach legacy runners! On our 15th year anniversary, they received a few perks, including a special anniversary race bib, custom luggage tag and — the best thing to celebrate with — a Virginia Beach Legacy Runner beer mug!

A New Year, A New Distance

Another favorite moment from our 15 years was as recent as 2014. This was the year we added an all-new distance: a 1 Mile race entirely on the sand. Appropriately titled “Mile on the Sand,” the additional race distance allowed runners to participate in the Remix Challenge.

Military Challenge

The year 2015 wasn’t just about our legacy runners. In this year, we introduced the Military Challenge. With 4,500 participants, it received the largest turnout across the Series. The Military Challenge is a race-within-a-race that several of our Tour Stops host. Participants compete against fellow members of the armed services. Athletes competing in the Military Challenge must be either active duty or a veteran of the United States Armed Forces. If eligible, their times are ranked against both their age group and those in the Challenge.
