Before reaching the start line, teams of people never cease to work behind the scenes to deliver you the Rock ‘n’ Roll experience. So who are those people providing essential training tips, creating content that inspires, managing charity partnerships, and rising early to greet you on race day?
Meet: Caitlyn Pilkington
Role: Associate Editor for Competitor Magazine and Women’s Running
Past Role: Charity Coordinator for Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series
Caitlyn, originally from Petaluma CA, (the Bay Area) moved to San Diego soon after attending the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her dad, an accomplished runner from Whittier College, first introduced Caitlyn to the endurance sports community in elementary school. Following in her father’s footsteps, she set out to run the annual Westside Relays in her hometown, destroying the 800-meter field in 6th grade. Caitlyn continued to excel at her sport, where she was later recruited by the Varsity high school cross-country and track coach and ran competitively for the next four years. It wasn’t until after college that she truly discovered her passion for the sport when she started running solely for pleasure, and of course the joy of a little competition. “My whole family runs, so I have spent most of my life at meets. Running has gotten me through a lot of difficult moments in my life—it’s one of the most forgiving, pure things I know of in this world.”
Favorite part of her job:
Caitlyn contributes ideas and writes articles for Competitor Magazine and Women’s Running. “I am doing what I love in the industry that I love. The whole thing is my favorite!” In addition, she oversees the editorial process for the monthly Destination feature and the 8 regional sections for Competitor, and the Social Life section for Women’s. “It’s definitely an awesome team effort for both publications—we all work together and share duties wherever needed.”
In her spare time…
Caitlyn loves to run, but recently has adopted swimming and biking into her workout routine. “I love walking around and people watching, so I am usually outside doing something with friends or hanging with my family.”
“I am obsessed with the Peanuts comic strip. My mom introduced me to it when I was five years old, and I have a whole shelf of first edition comic books. The Charles M. Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa is one of my favorite places to visit.”
