It’s the biggest beach party in running. The 17th annual Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon takes over the Virgina Beach Oceanfront on Labor Day Weekend. The running got underway Saturday with the 5K that started on 21st Street & Atlantic Ave and finished along the Virginia Beach boardwalk. Drew Midland, who works for local specialty retailer Running ETC, and 15-year-old Katja Baeuerte won the 5K with times of 16:57 and 20:01 respectively. Following the 5K was the “Mile on the Sand” where participants literally run on the beach. 16-year-old Hunter Johnson (5:59) and Sharon Wilkins (8:16) were the top finishers.
