Meet St. Jude patient Bertha
When Bertha was 13 years old, she was found to suffer from Ewing sarcoma, a type of bone cancer. She underwent a year of treatment at a hospital near her home. But two years later, when the cancer returned, Bertha’s family traveled to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® for her continuing care. Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food – because all a family should worry about is helping their child live. At St. Jude, Bertha’s treatment includes chemotherapy. “They really care for the patients here,” said Bertha. “It’s like my second home.” Bertha plays the piano and sings in her church choir. When she gets older, she wants to be a Child Life specialist, using play techniques to help children understand and cope with medical treatment.
Runners who fundraise for St. Jude while training for their race are called St. Jude Heroes, and they’re helping kids, like Bertha. The funds raised by Heroes help ensure families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food — because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.
