If you’re running Rock ‘n’ Roll Savannah, where are y’all planning on eating? My first time running the event, my fiancée and I did what every other runner did — we showed up at The Lady and Sons restaurant the night of the marathon and stood in line like everybody else, even though we had reservations. The next morning, we headed down to River Street and found ourselves waiting for a table for breakfast for almost three hours with all the other runners. That’s right — 15,000 of us had the same dining plans for the weekend.
But don’t you worry! I’ve got you covered. Here are five hot spots — away from the general tourist restaurants — that are worth the visit before or after the race.
1919 Bull Street, Savannah, GA
A great spot for the morning after the race. Or the morning before. Cinnamon rolls, muffins, huevos rancheros quiche, black bean soup and horchata. What’s that you say? Black bean soup and pastries? Yes, my friend, a little something for everyone. The huevos rancheros quiche is amazing. Amazing.
And don’t forget to pick up a kolache, a Czech pastry traditionally filled with sausage, cheese or fruit. They are fresh and warm. You just ran a marathon — don’t you deserve a pastry?
2430 Habersham Street, Savannah, GA
If you choose not to splurge on a pastry, how about a burger? Many locals will argue the burgers at Green Truck Pub are the best in town. While I can’t vouch for the meat burgers, I can vouch for the veggie burger. Seriously. None of those frozen flat cardboard mass-produced burgers here — just a big, moist and super-healthy patty with veggies and beans. If a veggie burger is just too healthy for you, order it with a layer of pimento cheese. How very Southern of you.

If you insist on staying downtown, then you must give this old-fashioned ice cream parlor a try. The homemade ice cream here takes the cake, er cone. Since you can’t have dessert before dinner, you’ll have to eat a sandwich first. How about something simple, like a cream cheese and olive sandwich or the always-popular ham and cheese? Then you can have ice cream. I hope they are serving the lavender flavor during race weekend.
7360 Skidaway Road, Savannah, GA
Have you ever tried pecans on your pizza? You southern-up your pie at Your Pie. Think Chipotle but for pizza. You choose your crust and sauce and move down an assembly line of toppings — like peaches, pecans and blue cheese — before your pizza is baked in a hot brick oven. Of course, you can also go normal and order pepperoni, onions and mozzarella. The creativity and possibilities are endless.
And save room for the bacon gelato. Or the Butterfinger gelato. Any of the gelato. There is also a second location downtown for you non-wanderers.
1834 GA Hwy 99, Townsend, GA
While it’s technically not in Savannah, this place is a must-see. Stop here and get a peach slushy. This is not optional. You will never have anything more Georgia peach-ish.
