Joys from the Back of the Pack

I’ve written about the frustrations of being a back of the pack runner, but if it was all negative, I’d never run again. I’ve found many joys running in the back, and they keep me going even when it gets hard. The beauty of running is that everyone wins. In most sports, one person or team wins and everyone else goes home a failure. But in running, starting is a victory, and no one can take away the sweet taste of crossing the finish line. Here is a list of my joys from the back of the pack:

    Milestones The Game Changer

“You missed the first Boston Marathon. Don’t miss the first Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon.”

    – Tim Murphy, creator of the 1998 San Diego Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon

In the early 1990s, long-distance running was for the fast and few. It was male dominated, skinny men in short shorts, running on roadsides, tank tops soaked, shuffling, looking like they enjoyed the ordeal about as much as an IRS audit.

    Q & A with Mr. 100 Joe Harris

One hundred. Such a round number. Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points in a basketball game. It’s the perfect test score. You don’t judge things on a scale of one to 99. It’s one to 100.

On Saturday March 14, 2015,  Joe Harris of Fairfax, Va., ran his 100th Rock ‘n’ Roll series event, the half marathon at the Rock ‘n’ Roll DC Marathon and ½.

Harris, 65, slowed down enough to sit down with us for a Q&A. We talked running, beer, trails, coffee, monuments and more.

Meet Jared Chan, a remarkable young man who has already become a Rock ‘n’ Roll Heavy Medalist at 12 years old.

Jared Chan’s passion for running sprouted from a fun 10th birthday challenge presented by his dad. For every lap he made around a track, dad Gary promised $10. Jared was more than up for the challenge and effortlessly ran 12 laps with a smile on his face. He was stopped short by his astonished father, who realized that this could get expensive.
